Era Campaigns

Elven Cleric

"Era campaigns" are a series of adventures and campaigns that focus on a world and specific eras within it. All of the play testing and World's Edge gaming done in Landbreaker has used the principles that we have developed for era campaigning. This section will describe era campaigning at length and give some examples of how you can use these campaigning techniques to enthrall your characters.

Campaign worlds are deep, multi-layered beasts with secrets hidden in many dark places, or obscured simply by years that have passed, buried under waste lands, or as forgotten memories. How can a single adventuring group in a single time period learn to appreciate the depth of the world, and the importance that past events have on the happenings of today? Many characters horde and read tomes about history and other arcane or obscure knowledge. How, as a game master can you give them all the information... certainly not writing those tomes.

Our answer to those difficulties is era campaigning. Each adventure or campaign in era campaigning focuses on the same world, but may drastically change the time period, era, or setting in which the characters will live and act. Each new adventuring group can embrace and learn about the intracies of a "historical" era (they are living it!) first hand. This frequent changing of eras and scenes gives a group of characters a breadth of knowledge about the campaign world as a whole.

Some eras are so important and exciting that they are worth doing a series on, and returning to time and again. This helps the character gain a depth of knowledge about a period and understand much more about the major actors, events, and subtle changes that were occuring in the world.

Many era campaigns place the characters in or around important moments or events in history, allowing them to be a part of, or witness the beginning, process, or backlash from these events and great upheavals. Characters are rarely directly involved in the major historical events, but are often in a good position to understand new facets and pieces of the story from their vantage point.

The longer you play an era campaign, the more stories you will have and the more and more they will interact and feed into each other. There is no better way to bring a group of players and a game master deep into the intracies, mysteries, and sheer glory of a deep and powerful world. Add new stories and adventures and return to previous and favorite groups to keep telling their story.
